MMA sparring vs grappling: the concrete differences
MMA sparring gloves (7 oz)
Protective padding on knuckles and back of hand. Strikes allowed. Semi-open fingers for basic grips. Use when strikes are part of the session. Not to be confused with boxing gloves — the format remains open.
Grappling gloves (4 oz)
Fully open fingers, minimal knuckle padding. Grip freedom is the priority. Wrestling, jiu-jitsu, submission work and guard passing. Not suited for hard strikes.
No. Boxing gloves have closed fingers — grappling is impossible. In MMA, specific gloves (sparring or grappling) are mandatory as soon as both stand-up and ground dimensions are trained.
Do you need both types of MMA gloves?
If your sessions mix striking sparring and grappling, ideally yes. To start, grappling gloves cover most technical sessions. Add the 7oz sparring gloves once striking sparring becomes regular (2x per week or more).
Are IMMAF gloves useful outside competition?
Yes — they are regular grappling gloves that happen to be approved on top. Usable in training without restriction. The approval only becomes mandatory at official IMMAF competition.
How long do MMA gloves last?
Grappling 4oz: 12 to 24 months depending on frequency, the lighter format wears faster. Sparring 7oz: 18 to 36 months with hand wraps and drying between sessions. Replacement signals: stitching coming apart, padding going flat, velcro no longer holding.
What is the most common buying mistake?
Buying grappling gloves for striking sparring — the 4oz padding is insufficient to protect your partner. For any session involving strikes, 7oz is mandatory. Tip: if you are unsure between the two, start with the 7oz sparring — they also cover light technical sessions.
Difference between F6 KARA Sparring and F6 KARA Grappling?
Same range, same Maya Hide Leather, same finish — but different format. The Sparring is 7oz with knuckle padding for strikes. The Grappling is 4oz with open fingers for grips. Both carry the F6 KARA label but are not interchangeable depending on use.
