Athlete body protector vs coach chest protector: what is the difference?

Athlete body protector
Designed to absorb body shots in sparring – full torso + rib coverage. Often approved for competition. The athlete wears it to take the opponent's strikes.
Coach chest protector
More mobile cut (open at the sides), comfortable for extended wear, protection focused on the solar plexus and front ribs. The coach wears it to hold mitts for hours without fatigue.

What a chest protector actually protects

Solar plexus
The most sensitive area. An unprotected shot to the solar plexus can knock the wind out of you and end a session. Plexus protection is non-negotiable once body shots are frequent.
Floating ribs
The lower ribs are the most exposed to uppercuts and body hooks. Multi-layer protectors such as the T15 Noir and the Mark Pro cover them completely.
Sternum
A hard area, but painful under repeated impact. In daily sparring, a good protector prevents trauma from building up.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chest protector mandatory in sparring?
Not legally, but strongly recommended as soon as sparring includes body shots. In serious clubs, coaches and athletes wear at least a head guard + mouthguard + groin guard + chest protector. Without a chest protector, repeated body shots cause cumulative micro-trauma.
Should a coach replace their chest protector regularly?
With daily use (5 sessions a week), expect 3 to 5 years for a mid-range model. The sign of wear: the foam no longer springs back and the protector "flattens" under strikes. A leather Mark Pro lasts significantly longer.
Is the Chest Guard Aura Plus T-17 approved for competition?
It is designed for training and for competitions compatible with the RDX T-17 system. For official competition (Swiss Boxing, WAKO), always check the list of approved equipment with the organiser – rules vary by federation.
Can it be used in MMA and kickboxing?
Yes. A body protector is universal across contact disciplines. In Muay Thai and MMA, it also protects against knees and body kicks. Make sure the protector covers the side ribs well – angled strikes from the side are common in Muay Thai.
