Free-standing or hanging bag: how to choose?

The main difference is not so much the quality of the training as the installation constraints. Here is when each one makes sense:

Go for free-standing if...

You live in a flat / rented home; your ceiling is plasterboard or too low (< 2.40 m); you want to move the bag between sessions; you want to avoid building work and dull thuds carried to the neighbours below.

Go for a hanging bag if...

You have a garage, basement or dedicated room; you want realistic fight-like swing; you hit very hard and regularly; you want maximum longevity (10+ years versus 5–7 for a free-standing bag).

Set-up and care

All our free-standing bags work on a similar principle that you should know before buying:

Weighting

The base is filled with water (quick, lighter to transport when empty) or sand (more stable, more permanent). Expect 80 to 150 kg once filled, depending on the model.

Surface

Hard floor (concrete, tiles, laminate). Avoid thick carpet, which destabilises the base.

Space required

At least 1.5 m of clearance around the bag to move freely. Minimum ceiling height 2.30 m.

Care

Wipe the leather / vinyl after every sweaty session. Inspect the base every 6 months (leaks, cracks). Lifespan depends mainly on the base, not on the bag itself.

Moving house

Empty the base, dismantle into 2 parts, transport. Allow 20–30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a free-standing bag move when you hit it hard?

A properly weighted base (80+ kg) stays very stable under most strikes. The bag will sway slightly at the top (this is normal and even desirable for realistic training), but the base does not shift. If you are heavy ( > 95 kg) and hit hard, choose a model with a reinforced XL base such as the F9.

Water or sand to fill the base?

Water is more practical (quick filling / emptying with a garden hose) but slightly less stable. Sand provides a denser mass and better shock absorption, but it is permanent and heavy to handle. Rule of thumb: water for tenants who will move, sand for owners with a permanent home gym.

What about noise for the neighbours?

A free-standing bag transmits less noise than a hanging bag – no vibrating ceiling. But the impact is still audible. Place a thick mat under the base to absorb vibrations transmitted to the floor. Avoid sessions after 9 pm in an apartment building.

Can you kick it?

Yes, that is precisely one of the advantages: the tall vertical shape allows kickboxing / MMA work with low kicks and middle kicks. For high kicks, check the model's height (6ft = 183 cm, well suited).

How long does an RDX free-standing bag last?

5 to 7 years with use 3–5 times a week. The weighted base is the main wear part (cap seal, micro-cracks in the plastic). The leather / vinyl bag itself lasts longer than the base.

What is the difference between the F6 KARA and the KT Ronin?

The F6 KARA is more classic: a straight, single-colour bag with simple printed targets. The KT Ronin is a 2-in-1 with integrated precision markers (targets at head / body height) and premium coloured finishes. Choose the F6 if you want an understated bag, the KT Ronin if you want to vary your target zones and have a distinctive look.
